Managing Stress and AnxietyAll of us have some degree of stress in our lives, accompanied with a bit of anxiety. Between work, home, friends, community and other interest, there is bound to be some stress and anxiety at any given time. Here are a few ideas for helping you to cope with this day to day type of stress and anxiety. Stress and anxiety in the workplace are not uncommon. Just about all job situations have moments when the workload appears to be overwhelming, or a problem appears to be particularly difficult. When faced with circumstances that threaten to undermine your ability to sole the problem, many therapists recommend removing yourself from the situation for a few moments. If possible, get up from your desk and take a walk to another room, or perhaps treat yourself to a breath of fresh air. The change in venue, even for a few moments, can help to ease the pressure you may feel under enough that you can begin to consider the matter at hand more objectively. If removing yourself physically from the environment is not possible, try to distance yourself mentally for a moment or two. In your mind, picture yourself in a completely different place, doing something that you love to do. Imagine loved ones with you, with everyone laughing and enjoying him or herself. Remind yourself that there will be many of those days to come, once you get through the issues of today. In some cases, it might be helpful to discuss the issue with a co-worker. Often, as we articulate situations we begin to put them in perspective as part of the verbalization process. We may find that our co-worker can help us see a solution that will help alleviate the cause of the stress in very short order. If stress and anxiety are a result of having to deal with some factor such as money problems, one effective way of lifting your spirits is to make a list of all the things in your town that can be done for free. Walks in the park, trips to the library for books and videos, attending a practice game at the local university, and many other forms of entertainment cost nothing. By realizing there are many things you can do, rather than dwelling on those you can's do, you will find your stress and anxiety about your financial situation easier to deal with. Anxiety and stress can be effectively managed, or they can be allowed to grow and eventually begin to take over your life. Do not let this happen to you. Should you find yourself unable to deal with the anxiety and stress, seek out medical help. Treatments are effective and will make all the difference in the quality of your life.
